Prior to his clerkship, Hunter practiced at a New York law firm for three years.  During his time there, he represented plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of cases, including complex litigation matters in state and federal courts, arbitration, and administrative proceedings.

Hunter attended Columbia Law School, where he was a James Kent Scholar, Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and Lawrence A. Wien National Scholar.  While in law school, he served on the executive boards of the Civil Rights Law Society and ACLU student groups, and worked as a research assistant to a professor.  He also published a student note that has been cited in legal scholarship and by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

In addition to California, Hunter is admitted to practice in New York.
