Lawsuit Filed Challenging High School’s Unlawful Discrimination Against Student Group

A student at Hoover High School in Hoover, Alabama, alongside the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the Hoover High School Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA), filed a federal lawsuit against Hoover City Schools, the Hoover City Board of Education, the school district’s superintendent, and Hoover High School’s principal for violating the Equal Access Act, the First Amendment, and the Equal Protection Clause. The suit, filed in the Northern District of Alabama, alleges that school officials revoked approval of and otherwise denied equal access to the Hoover High School YDSA chapter because they disagreed with the club’s views, while approving a chapter of Turning Point USA’s high school initiative, Club America, in violation of federal law.

Plaintiffs are represented by Quinn Connor Weaver Davies & Rouco, LLP and Altshuler Berzon LLP.
