Altshuler Berzon LLP generally hires five or six summer associates each year who have completed at least two years of law school. Summer associates are given research and drafting assignments similar to those given to associates. Summer associates are also invited to attend court appearances and depositions, participate in a weekly attorney lunch discussing current litigation issues, and join in various social activities.
Altshuler Berzon LLP will begin considering applications for 2028 summer associate positions in June 2027 (from students who have completed their 1L year) and will begin interviewing and extending summer 2028 job offers in July 2027. Because we will be hiring 2028 summer associates for both our San Francisco and Pasadena offices, candidates are welcome to state their preference, if any, in their applications.
Summer associates can expect to work on a variety of matters for international and local unions, workers and consumers, environmental and other non-profit organizations, and government entities, in matters involving labor and employment, civil rights, constitutional, environmental, election, and consumer law.
Our summer associates generally work with several different partners and associates during the course of the summer. The nature of their work and particular assignments vary, but usually involve in-depth research and writing, often on issues of first impression. Assignments range from short research projects to ongoing work on different aspects of a case throughout the entire summer.
Recent summer associate projects have included researching and drafting portions of legal briefs in the state and federal trial courts and on appeal, including in cases involving: free speech issues under the First Amendment; race, gender, and age discrimination under Title VII, Title IX, and California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act, Unruh Act, and Unfair Competition Law; election law challenges; disputes over the enforceability of mandatory arbitration agreements; and issues of statutory construction, Article III and state law standing, class certification, and the scope of available injunctive relief. Summer associates often participate in case investigation, witness interviews, and fact development; drafting complaints, NLRB position statements, and proposed court orders; litigation strategy conferences; and moot court preparation. They frequently assist in union arbitrations, including by interviewing and preparing witnesses, developing lines of examination, and drafting post-hearing briefs. Our summer associates are active participants in the firm’s weekly attorney lunches, at which we gather to discuss case strategies, developments, and upcoming issues, and are given substantial responsibility as well as extensive mentoring.
We ask summer associates to work for a minimum of 11 weeks. We do not have a 1L summer associate program.
Summer associates are paid in twice-monthly pay periods based on an annualized salary of $99,000.
The firm chooses summer associates based on research and writing ability, academic record, recommendations, and commitment to the work of the firm. We are particularly interested in individuals who are creative and who enjoy working on challenging legal issues.
The firm is committed to diversity and encourages applications from persons of color, persons identifying as LGBTQ, and persons with disabilities.
Applicants should email a cover letter, resume, two unedited legal writing samples, law school transcript, and list of references to Michael Rubin at mrubin@altber.com.
